The City of North Mankato invites residents to attend a special meeting of the North Mankato City Council with a representative from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). This will be an opportunity for residents to provide input on whether the City should establish a preservation program in North Mankato.

In the past, some citizens have requested that the City establish a preservation program to protect historic resources (i.e. single-family homes, businesses, apartments, places of worship, etc.). A preservation program includes adoption of a preservation ordinance that protects historic buildings from “insensitive” rehabilitation (rehabilitation that doesn’t match the architectural period of the building). The preservation ordinance also establishes the roles and authority of a Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC), a group of appointed individuals who ensure sensitive rehabilitation occurs to buildings and structures designated as being historically significant.

City Staff previously researched what it would mean to have a preservation program and reported back to the City Council during the Work Session on January 16, 2024. Minutes from that work session and staff’s memo, can be found on the City’s website here: Council Agendas & Minutes

North Mankato residents are invited to join the City Council, City staff, and a representative from SHPO on May 6th at 5:30pm at the North Mankato Municipal Building Council Chambers. A virtual option to participate will also be offered, the Zoom link will be available on May 6th on this page or at Council Agendas & Minutes. Participants will hear a summary of staff’s research and information from the SHPO representative. There will also be opportunities to ask questions about what a preservation program might mean for the community.

Questions may be directed to City Planner Matt Lassonde at matthewl@northmankato.com or 507-514-6456.
