The City is updating its Comprehensive Plan. Through the 2023 North Mankato Comprehensive Plan Update process, the City will review existing trends, develop a community vision, and identify goals for:

• Land Use & Growth Management
• Housing
• Economic Development
• Transportation
• Utilities
• Parks, Trails, and Recreation
• Business Districts
• Community Design

Goals, objectives, and policies identified through the Comprehensive Plan Update will guide City decision-making over the next 10 years and it’s important that community members provide input in this process.

City staff will use themes identified through this outreach to update the document and refine the vision for future growth and development in the community. Once revised, the document will be made available for public review and final comment, after which it will be presented to the City Council for adoption.

One of the fundamental responsibilities of local government is to plan for future growth and development of the community. The City previously completed the inaugural Comprehensive Plan in 2015 and it is now time to update that Plan to include new community goals, and define new objectives and policies that will guide decision-making.

Updating the Comprehensive Plan will help ensure that North Mankato remains prosperous, healthy, attractive, and equitable for future generations. Plan contents are intended to proactively and comprehensively address future growth and development initiatives. This process is important as it gives citizens the ability to participate in visioning and prevents others who may not have the City’s best interests in mind from dictating future growth.

The Comprehensive Plan serves as the basis for all land use regulations, connecting the community’s vision with the regulation of private property. Overall, the Plan provides recommendations guiding how land should be utilized to meet the needs and desires of the community.
