Benson Park Master Plan
The Master Plan for Benson Park was presented to the North Mankato City Council on March 2, 2009. The Master Plan was developed with the North Mankato Park & Green Spaces sub-committee and City staff over a five-month period which began in October 2008. Three concept alternatives, Natural Resource, Eco Park and Cultural Heritage, were considered prior to selection of the Natural Resource Theme which includes habitat restoration, natural resource education, nature based play and water quality improvements. An open house was held in February for the public to review the proposed Master Plan. The planned facilities also include a main park entry and parking at the north end of the park off Timm Road, secondary park entry and small parking lot off Carlson Drive, formal and informal park shelters, playgrounds for age groups 2-5 and 5-12, a natural play area, natural amphitheater, sugar shack/tree house in woodland, picnic area, outdoor classrooms and demonstration areas, fishing pier on Ladybug Lake, interpretive boardwalk, bridge crossing, Little Bug Bay for additional storm pond capacity and winter skating, trails and interpretive signage.
