Emergency Management
Preparedness is one of the four phases of Emergency Management and preparedness is the one that every citizen can actively participate in to be ready to deal with a variety of emergencies and/or disasters. The other three phases are:
- Reponses
- Recovery
- Mitigation
Many web sites are available to help citizens prepare for emergencies. A good web site to start with in preparing is: Ready.gov
A few more web sites that may help with planning are:
- FEMA
- Homeland Security and Emergency Management
- Citizen Corps
- Red Cross
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
- National Homeland Security Knowledgebase
Sirens
Sirens in North Mankato have been strategically located so as to provide as much overlap in sound coverage as possible. Sirens, however, are primarily designed for outdoor notification. Therefore, Emergency Management highly recommends that all persons purchase additional notification devices such as weather radios, severe weather pagers, scanners, portable radios, etc.
North Mankato sirens have three sound functions which are:
- Steady Tone = Severe Weather
- Wail = Nuclear Attack
- Voice = Information and/or Instructions
City Watch
North Mankato will have another notification system operational in 2006. City Watch is a software web based system that will be able to contact landline phones, cell phones, pagers, fax machines and personal computers with alpha numeric messages. This notification system will be useful for not only severe weather notification but also to alert the public about hazardous chemical spills, road closings, water shut-off from main breaks, lost or abducted children and many other public safety messages.
